Reiki can be a very beneficial therapy for horses of all shapes and sizes. Reiki helps to communicate in a way horses understand – energy!

Ever had a bad day at work and thought ‘I know, I will go and ride my horse that will cheer me up!’ and when you get off you have had the worse ride you can imagine? Well its not always the horse to blame! You get down to the farm and are still milling over the days antics, your energy level is still high and your mind is buzzing… your horse picks up on this intense energy and becomes more alert and wonders what it Is you are ready for. Flight from something that is likely to want to eat you maybe?? The horse will always pick flight over fight so becomes over aware of its surroundings ready to run at the first sign of trouble… or that crisp packet that’s blowing in the wind?? We have all been there!! Do you find your horse is over sensitive and struggles to settle into their work or out at competitions? Are they finding it difficult to relax into a new stable or with a new owner? Is their ‘bad behaviour’ becoming a cause for concern? Before spending a fortune shovelling in all the supplements you can get your hands on to calm your horse why don’t you try reiki first? No substances mean even the highest level competition horse to breeding stock can use reiki safely without the worry of the transfer of drugs from mother to foal or failing the random drug check at a major competition. Stressy behaviour can lead to weight loss and lack of condition, by masking the problem rather than getting to the root of the issue can put you on the forever spinning merry-go-round and the cycle becomes difficult to break.

Remember no horse will display ‘bad behaviour’ for no apparent reason. If your horses behaviour suddenly changes this could be due to trauma or pain

so I would always give the horse the benefit of the doubt and try to find a reason before brandishing them as ‘naughty’. My horse out of the blue turned a simple dressage test into a rodeo ride and the root cause was pain due to arthritis at an early age. There will always be a reason for ‘out of character’ behaviour and its usually a good one!

Most vets welcome alternative/complementary therapies to aid the recover of horses with injuries or illness

and reiki will not interfere with any medication the veterinary surgeon has prescribed. In fact, it can help the body to utilise the medication more efficiently and encourage the body to heal itself speeding up recovery! Reiki is even covered by some insurance companies under their ‘alternative therapy’ section so please check your policy as you may be able to claim for treatments

Now we have all the legal stuff… Reiki is a complementary therapy that is not intended to replace advice or treatment given by your veterinary surgeon. If your horse becomes unwell please, please call your vet in the first instance. Practitioners will never diagnose or prescribe any form of medication, so always consult your veterinary practitioner first. I am fully insured and qualified to practise reiki on animals
